Academics - Elementary

Elementary

The HCA Elementary program focuses on the physical, spiritual, and academic development of Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Small class sizes allow children to receive caring, individual attention as they develop fundamental skills such as reading, mathematics, writing, and critical thinking. Kindergarten through third grade students are taught phonics and reading using the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory approach, which engages students through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities.

Our elementary chapel curriculum focuses on the development of character traits and celebrates students each month that display those traits in the classroom.

Chapel is an engaging environment where our fourth and fifth grade students have an opportunity to lead worship, and all students participate in skits, games, and songs that help to illustrate the character trait and the Bible story each week.

HCA educates the whole child during these critical formative years as “specials classes” include instruction in physical education, technology, Spanish, visual arts, and music on a weekly basis.

Curriculum

The HCA Elementary curriculum aligns and exceeds Georgia Standards of Excellence, although we do NOT use Common Core. All of our K-3 teachers are trained in the Orten-Gillingham Multisensory approach to teaching phonics. This hands-on approach utilizes all learning styles and has proven to be incredibly successful in helping children learn to read. Technology is used by the teachers in order to enhance the learning experience. Students still use various tools including textbooks, interactive notebooks, and hands-on learning. Beginning in third grade, HCA offers an advanced track program for mathematics which challenges eligible students to begin Middle School on the pathway for future Advanced Placement.

Middle School

HCA’s Middle School program challenges students in developing high school readiness in all core classes: English language arts, literature, math, science, and social studies. Rotating quarterly exploration classes expose the students to nine-week courses in PE, Visual Arts, STEM, Drama, Band, Marketing, and Creative Writing. An end-of-day homework period permits students to develop time management skills and request assistance in completing assignments. Students have daily Bible classes focusing on the Old and New Testament and the life of Christ to give students a basic foundation of faith. Students also attend a weekly Chapel led by the Campus Pastor. Leadership opportunities are available through participation in National Junior Beta Club and Student Council. Students engage in community service and giving through school-coordinated service activities.

High School

HCA’s High School program equips students to embrace leadership roles and strive for excellence in completing a rigorous, college-preparatory workload in a small group classroom setting. Numerous on-campus dual enrollment and Advanced Placement courses are available in multiple subject areas as students progress through their high school years of study.

Academic and fine arts competitions offer platforms for students to display their talents as HCA participates in the full offerings of the GICAA Fine Arts and Academics league. These competitions include but aren’t limited to, quiz bowl, chess, literary, one-act play, history bowl, and robotics.

Dual enrollment

HCA offers dual enrollment courses in several areas including science, humanities, and math. Many students leave HCA with more than a semester of college credit while completing this challenging coursework in HCA’s supportive environment. Access to college-level courses allows students to feel successful in advanced courses with the additional support of their high school teachers and academic advisor. Several of our dual enrollment courses are taught in our classrooms by HCA faculty who have earned advanced degrees in specific subject area content. Additional courses are offered through online classrooms and are closely monitored by our dual enrollment coordinator.

Social and Emotional Support

We understand that navigating school can be difficult, and at times can feel like a balancing act of managing academics, social life, relationships, sports, extracurricular activities, and so much more. We thus tailor our support based on the student’s individual needs. Counseling at Horizon Christian Academy focuses on the whole student; providing support for emotional, social and mental health concerns. The counseling department strives to be a safe place to cultivate conversation and growth. Our goal is for the students to know and believe that they are made by a loving God, who is always with them. The Counseling Department is available to all students at HCA.  Counseling is provided through a Master’s level, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Registered Play therapist (RPT).  Students may be self-referred, or referred by friends, family, coaches, and/or staff members. Counseling is often done one on one, between the counselor and student. However, if the student’s concern is social in nature, other students may be asked to participate in resolving the problem. At times, the counselor will engage in class lessons focused on relevant topics to the classroom. We are honored to walk alongside and support our students, on their individual journey to be World Changers.
