Horizon Christian Academy offers academic support to students with certain diagnosed learning differences. The program is named the 412 Program based on the Bible verse:
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12.
At Horizon Christian Academy, the three strands are the student, the parent, and the 412 Teacher.
There are three different programs of support offered at HCA:
The SMART (Systematic, Multi-Sensory Approach to Reading Training) Program provides additional decoding skills instruction for students. This program targets those students in grades K-2 who struggle with phonics. The program relies on a research-based program, Up Words Reading, which addresses phonological awareness skills, phonics, fluency, sight words, reading comprehension, spelling, and handwriting. Additionally, the daily lesson plans and decodable readers reinforce each other.
The 412 Program provides academic support for students with a diagnosed learning difference. The 412 Teacher teams with classroom teachers to provide reinforcement and remediation in core subject areas. The model is either a push-in or pull-out for grades 3-5. Grades 6-12 offer a specialized study hall class or progress monitoring.
The Read 180 Program is an adaptive reading intervention program that helps striving students achieve grade-level proficiency. The program is available to students in grades 3 to 8. The program works to develop proficiency in vocabulary development, fluency, reading comprehension, and writing skills to develop independent readers. This is offered as an additional class.
